I am a teen who is very interested in joining your program. I have heard a lot about it and would like to become part of it. If you won't mind I would love to talk about joining your program.
Sincerely,
Janea

You know I never met Lee, but I wish I had. From all I have heard and read about him he must have been an extraordinary person. Carmen Zuniga, his assistant, made sure some or most of the footage he had shot in Afghanistan and in refugee camps before his last trip came out: it is in the documentary "Shadow of Afghanistan." There is a website dedicated to it -- I think it's www.shadowofafghanistan.com. Also, California documentary producer Jim Burroughs has written a book, inspired in part by Lee's story: "Blood on the Lens." It's excellent, I think. He took Carmen into Afghanistan twice to try to find Lee's remains -- but it was impossible.
Best,
Erwin

About Afghanistan, I have visited that country 4 times - once from Iran in 1972 when the king was still there (he reigned 40 years - 1933-1973), and 3 times from Pakistan with mujahideen fighting the Soviets, in 1984, 1985 and 1987. Each time I stayed only between 4 and 6 days -- because I didn't have more time, unfortunately -- so I have never even seen the capital, Kabul. The first time in March 1972 I went to Herat and Kandahar, and in 1984 I spent 6 days with A.R. Sayyaf - the man who had just introduced Osama Bin Laden to Afghanistan 2 months before I met him in Jaji, Paktia Province (and he had helped Bin Laden to set up shop there -- I didn't know Bin Laden then, of course, although I did have connections in his country Saudi Arabia as I had made the Haj pilgrimage in 1972-73 and almost got married in Jeddah that time -- long story...). Then in 1985 and again in 1987 I spent a few days with other groups of mujahideen who launched rocket and mortar attacks in Kunar Province. Each time I went barely more than 10 miles into Afghanistan (on foot), but I also came under artillery fire each of the 3 times with the mujahideen (close enough to have shrapnel hit the ground a few feet from me). I wrote for the Middle East Times weekly at the time, which I had helped to found in early 1983 with Thomas Cromwell and Dana Watkins in Cyprus (Dana and I came from The News World in New York - later renamed New York City Tribune). I also helped Carmen Zuniga a little bit in her attempt to find the bodies of Lee Shapiro and Jim Lindelof in Afghanistan, and I wrote a report about their deaths that you can find on -tparents.org- under Lee's name or my name.
All the best.

Hi. Don't know if you saw my answer (14 April) to your question about my photos of Afghanistan, because the answer appears on my page only. You can see more of my photos from Afghanistan on my Flickr photo page www.flickr.com/photos/erwinlux. But here is my answer again:

The 2 photos with the crosses are of the Luxembourg American Cemetery, my workplace for the last 16 years. 5,076 American WWII soldiers are buried here, including Gen. George Patton. You can see his cross in front behind the railing in the picture with the fog. Only 2 of my pictures shown here were taken in Afghanistan, one in 1984 and the other in 1985. Some of the pictures have captions that you can see when you click on them.

Dear Richard,

Thanks, and thanks for subscribing to Significato! (Tell your friends :-).

I was raised in Portland, Maine, so it's coming home for me.
We arrived to the worst winter in a zillion years. Over 8 feet of snow
in the Portland area this year.

The area of Virginia where we lived usually had about 3 inches.
Now that was culture shock!

And... they don't say "y'all" here! They say "Ayuh!" Can you imagine?

Oy!

But now the spring is coming, and we're moving out of our winter
rental on Little Sebago Lake, to Cornish, Maine, which is on the edge
of the White Mountains, 45 minutes from Portland. It's a charming
little village, so now we'll experience "village life".

Cheerio,

Peter

Hi Richard,
you asked me about why I like James Bond. I'm aware, that it may sound odd, but the idea I view behind the scenes is that there is one guy taking responsibility for the safety of one country and sometimes the entire world (of course Hollywood style) and that no situation is difficult enough to stop him and that it always ends with a victory.
I'm sure that there are just as many or even more "bad" points to make about these movies - but it is a matter of view, to take the inspiring things out of any situation.
p.s.: I'm glad you liked my photos :)

I liked the movie Crash and movies by David Cronenburgh, but most of the movies I like my wife hates or falls asleep after a few minutes, so what should I do? I am also a fan of "This American Life" radio program on National Public Radio!

Into the Wild

I just saw a fascinating film called "Into the Wild" about Christopher McCandless, who after graduating from college, took off into the wilderness in the 1990s. It shows the people he met traveling throughout the U.S. before traveling up into Alaska. This film brings out so many things about our relationships with nature, with material things, with people... Has anyone else seen this??
